Combinatorial Olfactory Signaling in Short-Distance Determines Host Plant Recognition in Locust

چکیده
Selecting palatable plants matters for insect herbivores’ survival, especially food-restricted oligophagous and monophagous species. However, the definite selection strategy to distinguish host from nonhost plants, as well underlying sensory basis, remains controversial. Here, we investigated olfactory recognition of in migratory locusts. By establishing one novel behavioral paradigm that allowed free-moving locusts make choices short-distance, demonstrated palps were required differentiate apart counterparts sensitively. Specifically, characteristic odors between plant defined differentiation food sources, this process intact palps. Further, single odor suppressed potency extraction, while attenuated repulsion plant. We also identified odorant receptors (ORs) repertoire modulated short-range key volatiles combinatorial signaling controls choice. Our results support a “pull–push” model which on locust acts tuning modulator recognition, expanding knowledge chemosensation.

Nitric oxide synthesis in locust olfactory interneurones
The brain of the locust Schistocerca gregaria contains a nitric oxide synthase (NOS) that has similar properties to mammalian neuronal NOS. It catalyses the production of equimolar quantities of nitric oxide (NO) and citrulline from l-arginine in a Ca2+/calmodulin- and NADPH-dependent manner and is inhibited by the Nomega-nitro and Nomega-monomethyl analogues of l-arginine. In Western blots, an...
متن کاملDivergence in Olfactory Host Plant Preference in D. mojavensis in Response to Cactus Host Use
Divergence in host adaptive traits has been well studied from an ecological and evolutionary perspective, but identification of the proximate mechanisms underlying such divergence is less well understood. Behavioral preferences for host plants are often mediated by olfaction and shifts in preference may be accompanied by changes in the olfactory system. In this study, we examine the evolution o...

متن کاملLong- and short-distance signaling in the regulation of lateral plant growth
Lateral growth of shoot and root axes by the formation of secondary vascular tissues is an instructive example for the plasticity of plant growth processes. Being purely postembryonic, lateral growth strongly depends on environmental input and is tightly regulated by long- and short-distance signaling. In general, plant vasculature represents the main route for long-distance transport of compou...
متن کاملHost ecology determines the dispersal patterns of a plant virus
Since its isolation in 1966 in Kenya, rice yellow mottle virus (RYMV) has been reported throughout Africa resulting in one of the economically most important tropical plant emerging diseases. A thorough understanding of RYMV evolution and dispersal is critical to manage viral spread in tropical areas that heavily rely on agriculture for subsistence. Phylogenetic analyses have suggested a relati...
